Despite #deleteFacebook, U.S. users are logging in as much as ever

Chelsea Hornick-Becker and Joseph Huff-Hannon set up a display of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg cutouts at the Capitol ahead of Zuckerberg's testimony in Congress on April 10.In the last quarter of 2017, Facebook reported that daily active users in the U.S. and Canada fell by about 1 million people — the first such decline in the companys history. It seemed at the time to be a concerning development for Facebooks future, considering that the region is by far the most lucrative market for the company.

But the social networks executives didnt appear to be worried, saying that they didnt see this as a “continuing trend.”

Turns out, they were right. Facebook reported its earnings for the first quarter of 2018 this week, revealing that the numbers bounced back, from 184 million Americans and Canadians logging into Facebook daily to 185 million, a record figure, which the company reported earlier in 2017.

The development is unexpected, considering the massive amount of backlash that Facebook received following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The #deleteFacebook movement was making waves, with many declaring they were off the platform for good.

It could mean that Facebook is even more untouchable than we thought. But the Facebook dissent could also come at a delay, with people taking time to absorb the news and making the undoubtedly difficult decision to leave the platform.

Whats more, user growth overall is slowing for the platform, suggesting that we might be reaching some level of Facebook saturation.
