Mumps outbreak confirmed at ICE detention facility

An immigration detainee stands near an US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) grievance box in the high security unit at the Theo Lacy Facility, a county jail which also houses immigration detainees arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), March 14, 2017 in Orange, California, about 32 miles (52km) southeast of Los Angeles.Seven cases of the mumps have been confirmed at an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Houston, Houston's health department said Saturday.

All seven people already had the infection when they were detained, according to a news release, which added that there is no evidence the disease was transmitted to anyone outside of the facility.

"Since these individuals were isolated inside the facility during the period they were infectious, we do not anticipate these cases posing a threat to the community," said Dr. David Persse, Houston's local health authority and medical director of the city's EMS program.
